Tone Color and Blend Exercise for Choirs and Ensembles

This tone color and blend exercise for choirs will help directors hear different sounds from their choirs and better inform them on the role of blend and balance in performing.

1. Have your choir or ensemble stand in a semi-circle shape (in any formation – mixed, SATB, TSAB, etc.)

2. Choose a voice to stand in the center of the semi-circle facing the rest of the group.

3. Have the group sing and match the vocal color/timbre of the voice in the center. Listening is key!

(Different colors represent different vocal timbres/colors)

4. Change it up and try different voices in the center to discover a different choral color altogether.
