The Right Practice Space
Where do you usually practice your singing? Is it a place that helps you relax?
I remember walking into another musician’s house one day while he was practicing and being shocked to see that he was practicing in the middle of his busy living room where the members of his family were coming and going.
Why was I shocked? Well, because I like to practice where no one can hear me. If I am learning a new song, trying to develop a new skill or sound, chances are, I am not going to sound great right away! This means any listening ears will likely make me hold back or tense up. To be tension free while I explore something new, I need to be alone.
Once I have my material ready, and I want to simply run through or do a “maintenance” practice, then I welcome the hustle and bustle of my house and I invite distractions while I rehearse.
My recommendation for all singers is that whenever you are working on developing your voice or new material, you find a private space to practice where you can be fully present to your voice and your creative instinct. This way you’ll be less likely to hold anything back. If you live in a busy household, plan ahead and arrange to practice while others are out or can agree to listen to something on headphones in the other room.
