Songwriting Help – Prompts

Getting started is often the most difficult step in creative writing.

Whether you are an experienced songwriter or just starting out, it can be daunting to stare at the proverbial “blank page.” Getting started is often the most difficult step in creative writing; even accomplished songwriters find themselves in a rut from time to time.

Songwriter Laura Clapp is familiar with the ebbs and flows of creative output, which is why she suggests that songwriters use writing prompts. A prompt can be a word, phrase or image that serves as a starting point for creative writing. Even if your creative juices are flowing just fine, you may still want to try using writing prompts as a part of your daily writing practice, as they can help you think outside the box.

Try These Writing Prompts

  1. A Phrase: “I didn’t see that coming.” Include this in your first line of writing.
  2. A concept: Write about two people falling in love
  3. A word: “Daylight”

Now, get writing! Take one prompt at a time and begin writing. Hold off on any judgement – just write. See where it takes you.
