Singing Across the World – Chris Hawks

Greek Singer Chris Hawks
Singer, songwriter, musician and producer Chris Hawks shares insights with singers.

When he was 18, Chris Hawks moved to the UK and later on that year recorded his debut single “Away from You”- which gained airplay on radio stations across Europe and reached the 12th spot on the Greek Airplay Charts.

A few years later he moved to Los Angeles and started recording covers on YouTube. This led to travelling the world to perform on cruise ships. While spending time on board, he recorded and produced his first album, “Covers in My Cabin”, literally in the middle of the Ocean!

Key turning points in developing your own unique vocal work?

I started singing when I was 16, but didn’t have the chance to take any vocal lessons the first 4 years. So, I worked a lot on my own and tried to develop my skills watching YouTube videos which is a major advantage our generation has. All you need is passion for singing.

An important vocal health or technique lesson you’ve learned?

For me, breathing was my major problem. Because I started singing with incorrect technique, it took me time to get it to where it should be. Also, I learned to use my mouth effectively to create the vocal textures I wanted.

A vocal artist who inspires you?

I love the Weeknd –  the variety of styles and the way he uses his voice. I also love his range; this makes me push myself more and more to get better each day.

What’s your relationship with social media – what do you do that “works”?

I use social media a lot. I’m not gonna lie: it’s hard to get noticed! But I have fun with it. I create content I enjoy and put it out there. Sometimes random people watch it and other times its those who follow me and all the people I met whilst performing.

Any social media “fails” or “successes”?

Chris’ most recent album

Success was definitely my 1st ever single when I was 18. It was shared a lot on Facebook and some radio stations found it, and in 2 weeks became no.12 on the airplay charts in Greece. Fails happen all the time. But this gives you the energy to strive to write better music and improve music and vocal skills.

What are you currently working on?

Now with quarantine, I work a lot with vocal exercises and I spend a lot of time improving my production and songwriting skills. It takes practice to stay motivated and inspired. Then, new ideas come easily!

What performance would you single out as being a “turning point”?

My first ever performance on a cruise ship – complete with an amazing orchestra and a crowd of over 2,000 people. What a great feeling!

What were one or two critical steps you took to reach larger audiences with your music?

When I was 18 and decided to leave Greece and travel. This boosted my confidence and taught me to follow my passion and desires. I learned that everything I am looking for is somewhere along the way. I just had to find it.

A favorite quote:

Thoughts become things.

An object that inspires you:

Palm trees! I loved them and they always bring me into a happy vibe. They bring that fresh summer music melody into my head.

What are your career dreams?

In a nutshell, it’s to share what I love and let other people feel what I feel. I think that’s the greatest prize. Of course, I would love to write a hit song that will be recognized and loved by a major global audience.
