The AKG WMS 40 Mini Vocal ISM1 is a UHF Wireless-System with a dynamic handheld microphone with integrated transmitter. It operates on free to use frequencies across Europe and America. It can operate for up to 30 hours with one AA battery and there is a low battery indicator built into the transmitter to save you any embarrassment on stage caused by your microphone cutting out. The receiver has a balanced jack output to connect to your mixing desk and there is an on/off/mute switch and connection indication on the transmitter.
High Notes
This is a particularly small and easily transportable wireless system with a lightweight mic that is easy to hold. The battery is easy to change, even while in use, and the microphone has a large enough range for most small sized venues. If you have more than one singer, AKG also offers a dual version that enables two microphones to operate with one receiver. The overall sound quality is good and vocals sound clear and interference free.
Off Pitch
Some users may feel the mic feels a little too light and flimsy compared to some others. It also appears to be less solidly built than some other (more costly) wireless microphone systems – so more care may have to be taken on stage and when transporting the system. Some users may wish the receiver had an XLR output option and could be rack mounted.
Audio-Savvy Reviewer Says…
Although not in the same league of some top quality microphones, the sound quality compares favorably to other entry level (and yet still more expensive) wireless systems from manufacturers such as Shure and Sennheiser. Some users even report favoring the mic’s sound on their voice over that of a non-wireless SM58; which considering they cost the same, makes the AKG WMS 40 Mini something of a bargain. – Chris Kennedy
