How to Recover from a Singing Gaff

I have to admit that even the most diligent preparation has not stopped unforeseen circumstances, banana peels, and gaffs in some of my performances! No one can be perfect all time.

In order to recover from a huge impossible-to-pretend-you-meant-to-do-it mistake in a performance, you must do something important before it happens. You have to decide – in advance – that if an obvious mistake occurs, you’ll be ok and it won’t define you. You could even go as far as to decide a big mistake might make your audience feel more connected to you. That’s right! The audience doesn’t always see mistakes as negative – especially if you don’t.

The next thing you must do to recover with grace from a big gaff, is to practice the recovery process in your rehearsals. When you rehearse with your accompanist or band – or even when you practice alone – see if you can keep time and get your song back on track when a mistake occurs without stopping or talking about it. Avoid stopping the song to fix things, and instead see it as an adventure you have to navigate. If you do this in rehearsal, you’ll be able to do it in performance, too!
