FOMO for Singers
Have you ever experienced FOMO (Fear of missing out) as a singer? For me, ever since I was a child, I would always feel a certain level of jealousy every time I attended a great performance by a singer or vocal group. Why am I not doing that? I want to do that too!
As much as it was terrible to have live music completely shut down all around the world due to the pandemic, it was probably the first time in my life I didn’t feel that competitive worry that other people were doing bigger and better things than me. For the first little while anyway, no one was doing anything.
I think we need to listen to those feelings of FOMO and jealousy, but at the same time we must “translate” them. Instead of thinking “Other people are doing great things and I’m worthless because I’m not doing those things,” you must tell yourself a new message. Tell yourself you love to sing, you want to sing and you are going to better yourself as a vocalist. Tell yourself those feelings are your motivation to go and find opportunities to share your voice in a way that others enjoy and that feels true to you. Well, what are you waiting for?
