Do the “Full Look” Practice
For both men and women, makeup and wardrobe malfunctions are going to happen from time to time, but performers who have practiced these areas in advance will be far more prepared for what might happen and how to handle it. This is why I tend to make outfit, jewellery and makeup planning an important part of my practice routine leading up to a show.
When you practice your full look, you’ll be able to determine what works – and what doesn’t. For example, I love fake eyelashes, but I only ever wear them when I’m in a theatre production as a part of my stage makeup routine. For those of you who have never worn fake eyelashes, they can really help to accentuate the eyes and therefore your overall expression, but let me tell you that it can literally spoil the mood if one of those things starts to peel off during a performance. It not only looks disturbing, it is totally distracting to the performer and can even be painful!
Men performing as men will generally have less details and elements involved in creating their “look” for performance, however, both genders will be doing themselves a huge favor if they do at least one practice with their full “look” before a show. This is especially true if you don’t perform very often, or if your performance “look” involves a big transformation, such as those performing in drag.
