Declare Your Singing Intentions
You need the support of your family or your housemates if you are going to develop your singing seriously. This is why you may find it incredibly helpful to sit down in an official way and declare to everyone in your home that singing matters to you. They need to know that you are serious about developing yourself as a singer. Then, ask them if they will support you.
If you are young, and you live with other people who are in charge of your household (a.k.a. Parents, guardians, landlord), you may find it difficult to be a singer. Here’s why: singing requires practice, and singing practice is sometimes necessarily loud (and often strange sounding!). The other people in your household may not appreciate you singing while they are home on a daily basis.
That’s not the half of it, though. Many people who are not educated in the arts don’t understand that singing can be a serious pursuit just like piano, physics, soccer or gardening. Those who don’t know much about it may think of singing only as an optional “extra” and not a priority. This means you will find it difficult to find financial support for your singing or time in the busy schedules of your housemates to make room for your practicing.
Once you’ve had this conversation, it will be a whole lot easier to negotiate a place for your singing in your daily life.
