Are You Allowed to Change the Key?
There seems to be an unspoken pressure some singers feel to perform a given song in the same key as the recording. For singers doing popular covers in contemporary genres, this is ridiculous! Bonkers! It really is.
Think about it this way. The artist who you know and love who recorded that song originally chose the key that was perfect for their voice. So why shouldn’t you?
Not convinced? The Temptations recorded “My Girl” in the key of Ab major in the 60’s. It was a huge hit. Then, the Jackson Five recorded it in the 70’s in the key of C major. Do you think any less of the Jackson Five, because they changed the key? Of course you don’t!
To all you ambitious singers who want to be able to sing like your favourite stars, yes, of course you can work towards their keys! Absolutely. Fill your boots! It is absolutely possible to sing a given song in a different key as your skills improve!
When it comes time to perform for an audience, however, you must promise me you will choose the key that allows your voice to shine at that moment in time. Do you promise? Whew. Now I know you’ll be at your best.
